How to properly use runes on defense slots?

How to properly use runes on defense slots?
Let's say we're in the ice area. Should I equip an ice rune for defense, or earth, which is strong against ice and water enemies?

Equip Earth. Always have the same rune on both defense and offense. I was pretty confused as well before testing it.

Wouldn't the Fire Rune do well against Ice if placed on the attack slot?

No, earth is strong vs. ice. Fire is strong against wind and lightning.Wouldn't the Fire Rune do well against Ice if placed on the attack slot?
