Every character has 10 or so spells by the end of the game. Only four can be set for use in battle. You can access the magic list to switch spells by touching the brown orb(usually near the blue orb-save point)

Some spells are passive, providing effects like counter rate up, defense up, magic defense up, speed up, chance of starting battle berserked, etc.

Physical attack spells like sacrifice a bit of hp for 2x attack, 2.5x attack, or unbalance, 1.4x damage but act last, 1x dmg+medium probability of poison, etc.

Magic attack spells can be categorized into 3 main groups. Electric(dmg+paralyze single target), ice(all enemies), fire(single target). Paralyze means a 30% chance of not being able to act for the turn, lasts 5 turns. I listed electric, fire, and ice up there, but there aren't really any elemental attributes in this game.

Heal spells, single and group.

Revivify.

In general, characters use many of the same spells. MP is rarely a problem, I've never run out of mp.

No elemental weaknesses, no combo magic.

Yeah, the magic system underwent a major downgrade as the Marks were introduced. Even the spell animations are subpar, at best.

(Hey, dmx is posting again. Nice. Welcome back.)

Do exist runes at all? If so, can you name a few? :)

No runes, only Marks of the Stars.

It's kinda funny actually, not even the people from the Magic Empire of Janam seem to actually know any magic till you give them their marks.

Runes are one of my favorite topics in the suiko universe  I trace the different runes, classes and lines throughout the whole series ever since the first game.

Is there a background story about the magic in Tierkreis? I mean, these things:
Physical attack spells like sacrifice a bit of hp for 2x attack, 2.5x attack, or unbalance, 1.4x damage but act last, 1x dmg+medium probability of poison, etc.
are exactly the effects which some runes did offer, so why abandon runes?

Same here. The runes peeked the most interest from me.
It's sad they don't exist in this game.

But before I go all "OMGWTFIHATETHISGAME" I'll get it and try it.

What a suiko game without the runes and the true runes.
I've came with an army who loves death like Yours loves live.
