In that case, those names do sound uncommon enough for the Japanese community. These games were made primarily with the audience there in mind.

Whether they sound common to the rest of us most likely have very little impact to their decisions.

LOL and I thought Kirkis' full name is weird enough...
I like Russian and French names, I hope they will use more of them in the next Suikoden.

I made a new topic with the same idea today (it was closed and I found this thread) and I have a few more names for you, which is why I am posting in this old thread:

Pesmerga
From Peshmerga or Peshmerge (Kurdish) refers to armed Kurdish fighters. Literally meaning "those who face death" (Pesh front + marg death). More info on Wikipedia.

Fuma
Smoke (Portugese I think, correct me if I'm wrong)

Kage
Shadow (Japanese)

Genkaku
Sword Edge (Japanese)

Shiro
White (Japanese again)
don't know about the "fourth son" though, but both might be correct :D

Mondo
Has several meanings:
Earth, universe, world, society, "a world of..." (Italian)

Hanzo
Probably taken from Hattori Hanzō, also known as Hattori Masanari, who was a famous samurai and ninja of the Sengoku era.

Barbarossa
Red beard (Italian).
Also there were quite a few emperors who had this name, like Frederick I, the "holy roman emperor".

Geil (Rugner?)
Means something like "awesome" in german, but is also used for "horny"

Kreutz
Cross in german (but it's written Kreuz)

Riou
Sounds like Ryu, which is japanese for "dragon".
But there may be a completely different meaning for this name, lol.

Also "Boris" is the short form of "Borislaw" which means "glorious fighter" in slavic (according to wiki this info CAN be wrong). It might also ceom from "Bogoris" which means "godlike".
"short" and "wolf" was correct, but it can also be translated as "snow leopard".

That's all for now.

Believe it or not... Rugner used as slang means all manner of rude things but there we go.

Fuma Kotaro is another famous ninja in Japanese history, just like Hattori Hanzo.
Genkaku
Sword Edge (Japanese)
Japanese has many words that sound the same and have totally different meanings, because meaning is derived by the kanji characters instead of the sound. In this case though, I don't recall any Japanese word meaning "sword edge" that sounds like "Genkaku." Genkaku can mean a number of things, such as "illusion" or "sternness" "seriousness." However, it can also be a typical name given to a monk or someone who has abandoned society as a whole.
Mondo
Has several meanings:
Earth, universe, world, society, "a world of..." (Italian)
"Mondo" is also a somewhat typical Japanese name, especially in Edo-era samurai classics. The most famous would be Nakamura Mondo.
Riou
Sounds like Ryu, which is japanese for "dragon".
But there may be a completely different meaning for this name, lol.
Riou and Ryu sound pretty different in Japanese, actually. "Riou" itself is also a name of one of the 108 stars in Shui Hu Zhuan.

Well, then I copy my list, too, because I find it interesting how names in the Suikoden world are derived from real historic people.

Siegfried and Sigurd: from nordic mythology, famous dragon slayers. Mostly known from the Nibelungen saga.

Percival Fraulein: From the Artus-saga. Fraulein also means "Miss" in German (but it's spelled "Fräulein".)

Charlemagne: Charles the Great.

Freyjadour, Ferid und Zahhak are from Persian mythology. Freyjadour and Ferid might come from the persian king Fereydun. Zahhak was also a king or a demon or whatever.

Bastan: there's an art museum in Teheran named Bastan.

Lucretia: Lucrezia Borgia from a famous italian family of tacticians.

Babbage: Charles Babbage built the first "cimputer". http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babbage

Egbert Aethelbald: Aethelbald of Mercia An anglosaxon king, who later became a high king.

Godwins: Godwin of Wessex was a nobleman who forced somebody to marry his daugghter to get more power.

Cornelio: Lucio Cornelio Silla was an opera from Georg Friedrich Händel

Perrault: named after fairy-tale author Charles Perrault

And about Tierkreis-characters...

Minen: German for mines
Büchse: German for rifle
Geschütz: German for gun (one of these names was written with "u" instead of "ü")
Tsaubern: German "Zaubern" means to perform magic
