Wind Runes allow for the use of wind power (great for sailing ships).
Water Runes, just like it's been said, allow for boats to have an easier time. (It would make it very simple for boats to sail against a river's current) Note that few boats in Raftfleet use oarves; that's because of the Rune's use.
Fire ... erh, that's pretty obvious. Fire is always obvious stuff.
Thunder ... same deal as Fire.
Earth would affect the soil; make it areable, rise up or lower down ...
If you watch the Nickelodeon TV series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, you'll get the idea. Sometimes the world of Suikoden and the world of Eberron seem alike too, on how Natural and Supernatural come together.
Aside from that ... there are/were the Rune Cannons of the Suikoden IV/Rhapsodia/Island Nations era.

But then, how often have we seen someone light a fire using matches or by striking a spark? Many of the things we see in the Suikoverse aren't fully explained. For example, in Suikoden IV we never had to sail our fleet depending on the winds. Obviously that was for game mechanics, but we can at least theorise that they were supported by wind runes.Felenan Prince wrote:hmm that may be true but we have yet to see anyone use a fire rune for cooking,a wind rune to speed a ship and the other things you mentioned
Ice has formed and there's snow between the tracks/ And I have seen the surface tear and I can't look back/ And cool low sun has blinded you for days from horizon to horizon can I dream this all away

Kyle used his water rune in a non battle way and Sialeeds used her wind rune several times outside of battle.
And if I saw you dancing, I would spin you around, spin you around, turn your world upside down
