Mathias might be from the Warriors' Village(from Suikoden1). They have a tradition there of carving the name of their lover on their sword. Well, Mathias' sword's name is "Isabelle."
Could Isabelle be related to Maximillian from part 1, and could Mathias be related to Sancho? Just something to think about.

They're unrelated to neither. Isabelle says that she is a daughter of one of the Maximillian Knights who became a shell of his former glory after the Maximillian Knights were disbanded following their unofficial aid to the City States of Jowston (During the war where Han and Genkaku fought each other). Thus, Isabelle's father was just "one of" the Maximillian Knights, not Maximillian himself.
Mathias states that his father also served under Isabelle's father, which means he also has nothing to do with Sancho.
Because Sancho is known to have come from a country that is further south than the Toran Republic (as revealed in Suikoden 2), Sancho could not have been from the Warrior's Village. Thus, Mathias (who is likely from the Warrior's Village) is unrelated to Sancho.
