An 'underdog' is a 'helpless' or sometimes 'useless' person. One who is unable to succeed...

I believe the underdogs your meaning are simply those that dont play a big part in the progression of the storyline or have really great stats that are typically used in team parties.

An underdog is someone who is not initially thought of as good, but turns out to be better then initially thought.

An example in this game would be Hai Yo.

In other context, an underdog is one who is expected to be inferior. Fans love an underdog, especially when they win!
