[Bug] Markus is chilling in your castle before he joins

Mentioned in reddit and several other places, players can run into Markus (as if he's already been recruited) in the graveyard area of your HQ quite early. I found him while doing the events in Norristar, I think before starting the Snow Peak event.

Markus is an automatic recruit as part of the story, in the next story arc.
