Suikoden Tierkreis Popularity

Post by Runemaster »

Well, I just visited suikox today and found out a topic from Milan Fiori:
Well the game reached the top ten on the front page of GameFaqs. Not a huuuuge deal, but it tends to mean the game is somewhat popular.
Ain't that cool? Nothin just sharing.

Oh yeah let's discuss everything about the game's fame here. :D :D :D

Edit: I forgot to state it was Top 10 Wanted FAQs

More Top 10 Entries at GameFAQs

As of now, Clicking "DS" link at the Frontpage leads to two Top lists namely:

Top 10 Games, where Tierkreis is currently at 4th,
and Top 10 Message Boards where it occupied the 7th slot.

Heh, good enough. How does that correlate with actual sales figures?

Maybe it does indirectly affect sales positively. It's 3rd at Wanted FAQs which means a handful of people are playing it.

With only an overpriced digital guide available, I'm not surprised it's on the Wanted FAQs list.

UPDATE! 03/29/09
Looks like our new game's good at GameFAQs I see.
Tierkreis has reached the 10th spot overall of the Top 10 Games and 2nd on 10 Wanted FAQs.

On the DS, it's currently 4th at Top 10 games and 7th on Message Board.

Who would've expect....?????

According to vgchartz, the first week sales in NA is less than 5000
I will post the exact number and the link later.

As far as the gamefaqs most popular message boards go, I think it's unfair to use this as any sort of proof of popularity until we've waited at least a month after the game has been released. Those boards fluctuate like crazy, and I've seen stuff that wasn't popular at all get relatively high places on those boards before. I'm pretty sure Chrono Trigger DS was up there for awhile.

Really the only order is that the Pokemon boards will always maintain the top spots, followed by Zelda games and Final Fantasy games.

EDIT: Although to counter my own point, I think it's pretty interesting that it's higher than Fire Emblem as far as number of users frequenting the board. Fire Emblem has a pretty recognizable brand name at this point and it's a first party Nintendo game. That's kind of hopeful.

That's bad.

BTW, Tierkreis is down from Top 10 to 17 at top games.

Naturally it's because the DS remake of the first Fire Emblem fell short of expectations, especially after the high-end console release in the form of Radiant Dawn not too long ago.

I really hope this game does well sales wise. I don't want this to be the last Suikoden game we have on the DS. Anyone have any updated or solid numbers so far?

Though Wii and I think DS games seem to have long legs. While only a few games on the systems sell big initially most games continue to sell over time. Even if the numbers are small week after week they add up. This is why there are several million sellers on the Wii yet they never ended up on the top 10 list or never made news.

vgchartz.com's last update is 3/27; i'm not sure how accurate it is, but it says the total sales in Japan is 0.17 million (170,000) and US sales is .01 million (10,000). (and... how trustworthy is this site??)

Here's a comparison...
Suikoden II: .38 mil
Suikoden III: .38 mil
Suikoden IV: .31 mil
Suikoden I: .21 mil
Suikoden V: .19 mil
Suikoden Tierkreis (Japan + US sales): .18 mil

no info on Suikoden Tactics (US), but the Japanese title Rhapsodia was .07 mil
Suikoden I & II (PSP-Japan only): .03 mil

I'd say it's doing very well as a spin-off (blew away Rhapsodia and likely Card Stories & the Gaidens which don't have info), but it doesn't compare to the console releases. However, considering the drop in popularity from Suikoden IV to V, Tierkreis has probably attracted many new players.

Another reason the games may have declined in sales is that piracy has increased since the PSX was released.

^ I've been meaning to talk about that.

The sales on VGChartz are always guesses until reports come out from companies. NPD is usually far more accurate with their US sales predictions. As for the sales, I'm pretty sure all of those numbers for the first nine games in the franchise are Japan-only.

If the VGChartz sales are to be believed, it seems (through hearsay only) that it's the worst selling Suikoden game in North America. It might have something to do with the fanbase being far more Sony-specific than not, but this coupled with Suikoden not being in the top ten PSOne Classics sales on PSN isn't exactly the greatest bit of North American Suikoden news...

That's amazingly close to what Suikoden V had, for a mere spin-off.

The Japanese sales on vgchartz can be considered reliable since the site get them from either Famitsu or Media Create. The American sales on the other hand could be merely guesses. Here are the sales numbers and ranks in Japan from Famitsu:

Suikoden II sold 214,608 units in 1998 and was ranked at 62. In 1999, Suikoden II sold 159,711 more units for a total of 374,319 and was ranked at 98.

http://geimin.net/da/db/1999_ne_fa/index.php

Suikoden III sold 377,729 units in 2002 and was ranked at 25.
Suikoden II book sold 42,471 units in 2002 and was ranked at 241.
Suikoden I book sold 33,167 units in 2002 and was ranked at 287.
http://geimin.net/da/db/2002_ne_fa/index.php

Suikoden IV sold 300,437 units in 2004 and was ranked at 34.
Suikoden III the best sold 19,693 units in 2004 and was ranked at 441
http://geimin.net/da/db/2004_ne_fa/index.php

Rhapsodia sold 64,472 in 2005 and was ranked at 197
http://geimin.net/da/db/2005_ne_fa/index.php

(Famitsu)
Suikoden V sold 194,780 units in 2006 and was ranked at 72
Suikoden I&II on PSP sold 28,271 units in 2006 and was ranked at 368
http://geimin.net/da/db/2006_ne_fa/index.php

(Media Create)
Suikoden V sold 183,653 units in 2006 and was ranked at 67 with first week sales of 135,289 units
Suikoden I&II on PSP sold 39,166 units in 2006 and was ranked at 279 with first week sales of 13,603 units
http://geimin.net/da/06/rank_mc.php

Unfortunately no sales for Suikoden I since the site I linked to does not have sales for the year 1995. I guess Suikoden I sold the majority of its copies on the first two weeks of its release and as a result the game did not show up on the listing for the year 1996. Suikoden I was release on December 15 of 1995 in Japan. No sales for Suikoden Tierkreis as well since it was released late on December of 2008 and could not make it to the list of best selling games.

Here are the sale numbers on vgchartz for those who are curious

Suikoden III 383,121
Suikoden II 381,708
Suikoden IV 304,561
Suikoden I 213,668
Suikoden V 191,673 ;_; I love this game
Suikoden Tierkreis 166,260
Rhapsodia 72,469
Suikoden I&II PSP port 26,884
