After using Clive with a Hunter Rune for six hours, I pretty much concluded that critical rate doesn't matter, because hit rate is determined before critical rate. No matter how high your critical rate is, it doesn't guarantee a sure hit because hit rate is considered first.

You can pretty much use somebody with a Hunter Rune. I had Riou, Mikumiku, Stallion, Meg, and Luc with Wind Runes for Wind of Sleep so it was always a sure hit. Can't make those Neclordia bitches sleep tho. I had to earn the Master Garbs the hard way. >_<

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that hit rate was calculated first. Is it calculated before multi-attack as well, or can I shoot for a character with high SPD and LUC and maybe a Double-Beat Rune?

I'm pretty sure hit rate is considered first. You never make multiple hits if you miss, after all.

Well, has anyone remembered Millie (and her pet Bonaparte)? While she has two extra rune slots and has high affinity to a number of elements, including Blue Gate, the Blue Gate's Empty World is a risky one to use. Millie misses quite often, so probably I'm going to stick Killer and Double-Beat Runes on her in order to raise her chances of hitting criticals with her above-average LUK and giving her an extra attack per turn.

You can farm Master Garbs off Bronzems at the final dungeon.

The following can be built effectively as long-range physical attackers, with a few notes about some characters having good magic affinities to certain elements:

- Kinnison (2 slots, great Unite Attack with Shiro, good armor options)

- Ayda (2 slots, B affinity to Earth; with the proper setup Kinnison and Ayda can decimate entire enemy parties in one shot with their Unite Attack and she will still be able to make use of her high Earth affinity)

- Clive (1 slot, high TECH and SPD; multi-hits often and dodges a lot of physical attacks)

- Shilo (1 slot, highest Critical Hit rate in the game at 17.5% @ level 60, followed by Riou and Shin at 16.88% @ level 60)

- Stallion (1 slot, A affinity to Wind; multi-hits a lot as well, *Godspeed allows you to run across the overworld map at full speed and to run from all non-event battles)

- Lo Wen (1 slot, the tankiest L-range fighter in the game @ 05 PROT and 05 HP and good armor options, awesome Unite Attack with Gijimu and Koyu)

- Sasuke (1 slot, high TECH and SPD allows him to multi-hit and dodge often, in addition to being slightly tankier than Clive)

- Simone (1 slot, pretty average stats across the board, with MDEF as the highest stat, has a pretty good Unite with Vincent, but having only 1 free accessory slot hurts him a lot since you can't just spam Power Rings on him, and Simone is easily the LEAST interesting Narcissist in the entire series; S1 had Vincent and the awesome Mage Knight Milich, S3 had Augustine whom you can build into a killing machine with the right setup, S4 had the REAL Schtolteheim Reinbach III, S5 had the rare female Narcissists)

These L-ranged characters can be decent in the right hands, but are not recommended otherwise:

- Gabocha (1 slot, high TECH and LUCK allows for higher critical hit chance; but low STR and bad defensive stats (HP, DEF, MDEF), limited magic resistance options, and over-dependence on Unite Attacks with Shiro or Gengen really hurt him a lot)

- The squirrels have only 1 rune slot (Makumaku has 2) but they have pretty bad stats overall. It's not worth giving *Double-Strike to each of them to improve damage because they can't take a lot of hits (Mokumoku is a bit tankier), nor is it worth giving them *Double-Beat because even if they attack twice, they can't even hit anything (with Mokumoku actually having the lowest TECH growth in the game with 70 @ level 60). And no, it's also not worth giving them elemental runes that match their respective affinities because all of them have the lowest affinity to their elements (+20% damage but can backfire). The only saving grace is Makumaku, whose Water Rune does not have any offensive spells that can backfire, but even then, he has very low HP and DEF, so he still goes down like a wet tissue paper against hard-hitting bosses.

- Tuta (1 slot, 02 MAG, A affinity to Water; isn't it a cruel joke that he's one of only three characters [the others are Luc and Yoshino] with a Water affinity of A and yet he's actually one of the weakest characters in the game?; his stats suck across the board, his HP growth is THE lowest in the game, and his Medicine Rune DOESN'T always work; use him only if you want some challenge as the game is easy enough to beat no matter who you bring with you to the final boss)

The following CAN be built as physical attackers, but their real strengths lie in their magical abilities rather than physical prowess:

- Meg (1 slot, 03 MAG, A affinity to Lightning and Wind; she's an odd case in that she can only be built as either a physical attacker or as a mage, but not both at once unless you like equipping Lightning and Wind scrolls on her; as a physical attacker, DS + Exertion allows her to dish damage and unleash her one-turn-only Trick rune when the battle gets long enough; as a support for Gadget, the Lubricating Oil + Badeaux's Howling Rune + Unite Attack combo can utterly wreck regular enemies at once; as a mage, her MP is too low for her to make good use of her strong affinities to Lightning and Wind, but then, Luc absolutely wrecks everyone else at magic, and you will only actually need few high-level MP charges from all your mages to beat the final boss anyway)

- Eilie (2 slots, 04 MAG, B affinity to Fire; Eilie has less powerful affinities across the board but she can compensate for it by being able to attack, take damage, and use magic all at the same time with DS + Rage; or be able to support well with DS + Mother Earth / Flowing)

- Tengaar (2 slots, 06 MAG, B affinity to Fire, Earth, Resurrection, and Wind; she and Eilie are more durable than most L-ranged mages so they can dish and take more damage and still be able to use elemental runes they have an affinity for, but seeing that she has high magic affnities across the board, she might be better off with DS + Rage/Cyclone/Mother Earth to further increase the damage of her Unite Attack with Hix and still be able to use your elemental magic of choice when needed)

- Millie (2 slots, 04 MAG, A affinity to Fire and Lightning; her bad physical stats and low TECH just won't cut it as a physical attacker, unless you somehow want to increase Bonaparte's damage from the Groundhog Rune with DS, but then it misses a lot and she goes down like a wet tissue paper against hard-hitting bosses as a result; so she is actually better off using Rage and Thunder as the only character asides Mazus and Killey to have the highest affinities to the strongest offensive magic runes in the game)

- Rina (3 slots, 06 MAG, B affinity to Water; as tempting it is to make Rina a physical attacker due to her 3 rune slots and okay TECH, it's not really the proper use of her abilities as she has pretty bad physical stats and will go down like a wet tissue paper; Blue Gate + Flowing + Barrier / Cyclone / Mother Earth is still the best method of achieving her full potential, but of course she won't be damaging as high as any other physical attackers out there with just her Blue Gate spells)

I always use Clive for physical attack and possibly Eilie or Rina for Magic
