Just to make things clear, I don't think the translators themselves were incompetent. I think Konami's conditions were awful (to be fair, though, most Japanese video game companies weren't any better at the time), which resulted in a terrible localisation. And actually some parts of the game weren't that bad, but other parts were offensive. A good translation takes time. I'm still a university student, and not a professional translator, so take my personal experience with a grain of salt, but sometimes a single paragraph takes me hours to translate, and English and French have much more in common with each other than Japanese and English.
And yes, I know that my English syntax is quite faulty for someone who aims to become a professional translator. My French prose is flawless, though.
