Disgaea is cool.!

Post by Noraibah »

Disgaea is my favourite strategy game in terms of the storyline.I think it is really like cool that they released a 'prinny' disgaea;mega cute(and I am telling the world that it is the most adorable thing has ever happened to a game).Anymore of your oppinions on disgaea?

I love the technically ludicrous aspects of Disgaea. It's all about over-the-top and extreme exploitation, which is definitely the complete opposite of most SRPGs.

As for the plot, I find the games' plots to be quite mediocre. They're caricatures and basically pander to otaku, which makes them sort of hard to understand fully without having full knowledge of Japanese culture (not just anime/manga/games, but all aspects).

I really enjoyed the PS version, and I plan on getting the PSP version one of these days. I loved the battle system and the character building system, though I never found the time to level to 9999 (or was it 99,999?). I beat the game once somewhere lower than 70 and left it at that.

Disgaea 3 made levels irrelevant. You can literally go from 1 to 9999 in less than ten minutes pretty early on in the game (Like after sixty or so hours).

60h is early in the game? Wow^^

I'm no fan of the Nippon ichi games (Disgaea, Makai Kingdom and whatever they're named..), I don't really know why.

Some people have been playing for hundreds of hours, just to beat the ultimate final enemy.

Yep, I have a friend who reset the in-game clock in Disgaea (PSP version) because he played past the max time. Sad thing is, he does that for just about every game he plays; he should really spend more time with his 2 kids...

I've tried to play it twice now, once when I was younger on the PS and now I bought it again on the PSP thinking that i'm older so I should enjoy the strategy more. Nope. I can't get into it. The silly plot appealed to me when I was younger but now not so much. The strategic elements are far too concerned with grinding. To think that you can't even promote a unit to a new class without starting them over at level 1? crazy! And the unit that gets the kill gets the EXP, an awful idea. Also 9999 levels? really? It just doesn't seem like my thing.

That being said I might get the prinny PSP side scrolling game once it's cheap.

The high levels are my biggest turn-off; I never did any of the optional, never-ending boards. The game can be beaten without over-leveling, though. It's a nice feature to appeal to the hardcore, dedicated players while allowing the casual players to still enjoy the game.

Anyone play Disgaea 2? I was tempted to buy it at Gamestop yesterday, as they didn't have the first one or the PSP version that I would have rather had, but I didn't get it. I also saw Jeanne D'arc for PSP for a much cheaper price. Which would you guys recommend?

Disgaea 2's a good game, though I'd wait for the PSP version for some of the Disgaea 3 features that make the game way easier to customize.

Anyway, I won't really defend the game's penchant for grinding (since it really does require it) but once I got the hang of what I should focus on, clearing the game and powerleveling became ridiculously easy. In Disgaea 1 you're supposed to focus on maxing out your character's stats (counters, movement range, jump height, etc.) then getting the best defense items. In Disgaea 2, you focus again on your characters, but items also require nurturing or you'll end up getting your ass whooped. In Disgaea 3, special attacks are key to dealing immense damage since they ignore defense and resistance as opposed to the previous installments.

Disgaea 3 made it way easier to level up multiple characters at once, too. With the advent of the classroom, they made it possible for any character to leech EXP or Mana gained by the character they're sitting next to. When you couple that with the ability to dupe/farm specialists (specifically the ones that greatly increas EXP and Mana gain), you're laughing.

My current setup, while not the best, allows me to go from level 1 to 9999 in fifteen minutes. Total playtime? Just under 80 hours. Pioneers in guide creation and research for Disgaea 3 only managed that in hundreds of hours, but I reaped the benefits of playing through the game nearly a year after its release.

On a side note, the trophy patch was announced for Disgaea 3. As expected, it's not newbie friendly at all (a bronze trophy requires dealing one million damage to a single unit, while the gold trophy version requires dealing ten BILLION).

I've only played the first one...fun game, interesting story, but the tedious level grinding wore me down after a while.

The Disgaea series is alright, it has some unique features. I often get frustrated by the dark senate however, especially when you need funds or permission to invade other places. I have only played the first two, I beat the first one, but did not master it and kind of quit during the second installment. I like the job classes, quite the variety and the fact that you can also create certain demons and angels.

I bought Disgaea two weeks ago because I like tactic and the characters design are really cute but I don`t have much time to play it.

I've only every played Disgaea 1 and 2, and while I like them a lot, I'm definitely not the demographic they had in mind. I just don't have the time or patience to do 90% of the stuff you can do in these games. I actually only beat the first game, and by the end of it I was really dragging my sorry carcass through the battles, only barely surviving every single map. I rarely used Item World, and when I did I almost never went deeper than 10 levels. I rarely bothered with the Dark Senate. I didn't do any of the bonus unlockable maps. I basically missed out on almost the entire game, but amazingly, I still feel like I got my money's worth. It's pretty impressive for a game to have a main storyline from tutorial to final boss be less than 10% of the overall game experience.

As for Disgaea 2, while I liked it a lot, I guess I must have just lost the edge I had when I played the original, because that game kicked my ass all over the place. I felt like every new map was an enormous step up in difficulty, and didn't really have the pigheaded determination to grind myself up to the necessary levels.

I haven't played an entry in the series for a while now, because I frankly don't have it in me, but I wish the series well, and it's satisfying to know there's a series out there not interested in holding the hands of those of us who have been coddled by modern gaming's overall decrease in difficulty.
