[Guide] Obel Ruins

Post by KFCrispy »

Obel Ruins Guide
There are 6 floors in Obel Ruins. The first time through, you end at 5 and the 6th will be available the 5th floor has been cleared and you're returned to Obel. The 6th floor is a different chamber based on the element of the day (Rage, Thunder, Flowing, Cyclone, Mother Earth.. "Chamber"). Also, there are different 'sets' of stages that will have different enemies, diggable treasure and chests. (if you don't find what you're looking for that time, you'll have to wait until you're back again to see if it's there!)

*Enemies are based on your characters' highest level.

As the game tells you, once you clear a level, you will have the option to either continue to the next floor or you may return to Obel. If your entire party is wiped out in a stage, you will not get the option to Retry/Continue like a normal failed battle, but instead you will be brought to Obel - any characters that died and items that were used will not return.
*But as long as you're careful, you can ALWAYS try out the next stage - if you want to quit or feel you won't make it out alive, choose RETRY (press Start when it's your character's turn and you will find that option) and now remove all optional characters and keep characters that are necessary to the plot (ie Kyril, Andarc, Seneca, Kika but not Rene, Rita, Eugene..) and just get defeated to get returned to Obel.. in fact you can use a single character like Kyril. When you lose in a stage, you'll lose any items you picked up during that battle, but the previous battles' items will be kept.

Finishing any of these levels with S Rank will net you a trophy that serves no purposes other than bragging rights (Obel Ruins - Level 1, Obel Ruins - Level 2... Rage Chamber, Cyclone Chamber, etc)

Enemy strategies
Golem: One of the most dangerous enemies you'll encounter. High ATK, high DEF, high HP. They also have 2 long-range attacks by launching their arms--they can hit a target up to 8 units away. Get rid of the arms by having full-HP tanks absorb a hit and heal if necessary (stay on your elemental terrain). when you get near, they still have an small 2x2 area attack hitting directly in front of them, so be careful. While you still have low levels and limited resources, the best damage you can deal is to simply change the floor to have their opposite element and let that do the work. Remember that each time you change the element to the opposite, the units take can damage, so if you have a lot of turns in a row you can swap the element between neutral and opposite elements. Attacking is optional; only necessary for killing it. Watch out when using magic, because as usual, the tiles will change according to the element used.

Dragon: mages are highly recommended. dragons fly so they are not affected by the elements on the floor, but spells that affect specified elemental tiles (Fire, Lightning and Wind have these types of spells) will work as usual--if you plan on killing all enemies except 1 to explore the map for treasure, watch out for Elementals that are hovering over land, as of course they will be damaged by these types of spells.

Digging: once you have the ability to Switch, searching the map for treasures will be simple. avoid destroying the Elementals that fly around and take care of the enemies, then you can search around until you defeat the Elemental(s). if there is no Elemental, keep a Flying Bird alive, or a Skeleton (Bow), or Skeleton (Sword) and keep them on their weak tiles, have good Dodge and other defensive skills, and if you are planning to keep a Skeleton (Sword) alive, you need to disable Counter-Attacks! Eugene is highly recommended as a punching bag since his Firefly Rune attracts enemies. However, the chance that the enemy will target other nearby allies is not reduced to 0%, so stay clear. If you want, you can surround and trap the Skeleton (Bow) because archers cannot attack something 1 square away from them.

there are 6 floors. On the first run through the ruins you hit a dead end on floor 5, then the poison disappears. Any subsequent run through you can get to floor 6, but floor 6 depends on what day of the week it is. You don't gain anything for beating the place, but the 6th floor has a dragon which drop lots of items for guild quests. You can't keep playing the same level over and over, you can either continue or quit.

For Items, All I know is that Floor 3 has an Ancient Coin, Floor 4 has Ancient Parchment, and Ancient Recipe, floor 5 has Ancient Dish (Before poison leaves only). The 5th floor after poison leaves has Ancient Ring. The Mother Earth chamber has the Ancient sword, and each elemental chamber has some good elemental runes you can find in chests.

Getting an S rank on any of the 5 basic floors results in an item called "Obel Ruins - Level 1-5" depending on which level you got an S on. Maybe you get something if you get all 5, but I have yet to get an S on level 4.

If I recall correctly, I dug up Kinkaku (not Ginkaku) armor in the Rage Chamber, and Perfect Armor in the Cyclone Chamber, and an item called Wizened Arm in the Mother Earth chamber that might be a quest item. I also dug up an Ancient Ring and Ancient Sword (but I missed the Dish it seems). In addition, you can find, in chests, Pirate King Vest and Bracers (Bracers in Rage Chamber), a Goddess Robe, orbs such as Flowing Orb, Mother Earth Orb, etc.

Stealing from the dragons will give you a mirror that matches their types (Flame Mirror, Wind Mirror, etc.). These mirrors are infinite use from inventory that lay down a basic 5-square element matching their type. Dragons also drop scales, fins and occasionally a meat that is used in S rank quests.

I wasn't able to dig in the Thunder chamber, only because it is such a hectic battle that I could only beat it using my 4 best characters instead of 8 (the party starts out split into two groups of 4 in a very small chamber for fighting). I'll try again later.

Sorry. I've spent about 20 hours in Obel ruins lol. After you beat the 5th chamber the 2nd time, it opens five 6th floors. Each of these floors are tailored to an element. Which element it is depends on which day you enter. If you enter Obel on a fire day, it will be the Rage chamber.

KFCrispy wrote:and all enemies are based on Kyril's level, correct? meaning you should try to keep Kyril out of the battle while others power up
Yes, but I like leaving Kyril in and levelling up characters with the main group. If it's a support character like Yu, he'll get massive exp for every heal. If it's a mage, just lay down elements. If it's a fighter, lay down elements until he/she gets to a reasonable level, and then go for fly lizards.

guys...I need to know, if kyrill apears in the blue square BEFORE I start the battle, does that count towards increasing the enemies levels?

I have gone to hunt monsters in the ruins in kooluk and in that battle I made sure kyrill wasnt involved, then I go to the obel ruins, and kyrill seems to always be in that blue square, if I switch him out before the battle begins, the enemies are like level 13{my kyrill is almost at level 20} and if I keep him in the battles, the enemies levels are still the same!

so what am I doing wrong? how can I make sure kyrills levels dont affect the monsters?

please help!

Wow, I'm guessing some of you are extremely strong. I was terrified to just be on the 4th floor. All my skills are S, my character levels are around 34, and I have the strongest armor/accesories that I can buy, with a few goodies from treasure chests. My weapons are all level 7 also, should I go for the gold?? :D

i think enemies in Obel are based on Kyril's level regardless of whether he fights or not; from what i've read, it's just beneficial to keep him weak while your other characters gain many levels so they can destroy the enemies in Obel...?

it seems like the Obel Ruins enemies and treasure chests change from elemental day to elemental day. i have been there on 3 separate occassions (leave town & come back), first Fire, second forget, third Fire. on the 2nd Fire time, i got the same enemies as the first time and no new chests. but there WAS a chest and different enemies on the second visit (but only the first floor, not second.. and i didn't go further)

i was wondering if unique items you can dig up with change from element to element, as well as treasure chests and enemies (basically... 5 unique sets of areas for Obel Ruins)

also, about that Ancient Dish - do you need to dig it up or is it a treasure?

I hate Obel. The Golem just punched Hervey in his face. Gar. He's dead, I sent his body out ta' sea! Gar...

Yea, nothing is worse than a bat putting you to sleep, than being waken up by a 1 ton punch to the jaw. How do you guys manage?

What I do is send Kyril or Lazlo out to lure the golems to fire their arms because they have decent hit points. Everyone else stays behind, fighting bats and helping Kika with skeletons, while Lazlo uses his level 2 rune on groups of skeles.

Once the arms are gone, I usually send a flyer over to drop opposite elements on the golems so that they burn every round until they get low enough to drop with one or two hits.
